Everyone has energy centers in their body called chakras. There are seven chakras that all function in a specific manner. Each chakra has a corresponding Sanskrit name, color, element, function and attribute. These chakras regulate the energy that is within us.
Root Chakra; Sanskrit Name - Muladhara
The first chakra is the Root Chakra. Its Sanskrit name is Muladhara and is represented by the color red. This energy point is located at the base of the spine and on the physical level regulates the organs of excretion. It is symbolized by the earth element and also controls a person’s sense of smell. Its emotional attribute include survival and primal instinct.
Sacral Chakra; Sanskrit Name - Swadhisthana
The Sacral Chakra with Sanskrit name Swadhisthana is located in the genitals section. It is associated with the color orange and the water element. This chakra controls the reproductive organs and the sense of taste. Emotional attributes include self-acceptance, emotion and sexual energy.
Solar Plexus; Sanskrit Name - ManipuraThe Solar Plexus is linked to the color yellow. Its Sanskrit name is Manipura and regulates the pancreas and abdominal organs. It is represented by the element of fire and is in control of an individual’s sense of sight. It is located in the navel area. This chakra has emotional attributes of self-will, mental acuity and sense of identity.
Heart Chakra; Sanskrit Name - Anahata
The Heart Chakra is also known as Anahata in Sanskrit. It is located in the heart area and regulates the lungs and thymus. It is associated to the color green and the element of air. Moreover it is responsible for the sense of touch. Emotional attributes include compassion, love and healing.
The Throat Chakra; Sanskrit Name - Vishuddhi
The Throat Chakra is located in the laryngeal pluxus area. Its Sanskrit name is Vishuddhi and is related to the color blue. This chakra controls the thyroid and other related organs. It controls the sense of hearing and is represented by the element of ether. Emotional attributes for this chakra are self-expression and speech.
The Third Eye Chakra; Sanskrit Name - Ajna
The Third Eye Chakra is also known as Ajna in Sanskrit. It controls the pituitary gland and is located between the eyebrows. The color indigo is associated with this chakra. It controls a person’s sixth sense or higher mind and is represented by the element of time. Emotional characteristic for this chakra are intuition and extra sensory perception.
Crown Chakra; Sanskrit Name - Sahasrara
Last is the Crown Chakra or Sahasrara in Sanskrit. It regulates the pineal gland and is located at the top of the head or the brain. It is associated to the color violet and represented by the element of space. This controls beyond sensory things. The emotional aspect for the Crown Chakra is divinity, peace and enlightenment.
